The Elk & Bison Prairie offers one of the most direct ways to observe large wildlife in Land Between the Lakes. Elk and bison move freely within a 700-acre enclosure of native grasses, open fields, wooded edges, and small ponds. Visitors remain inside an enclosed vehicle while following a paved loop through the prairie, making the experience part wildlife drive and part introduction to a landscape that once covered much more of western Kentucky

The visit follows a 3.5-mile paved loop road through the enclosure. There are three designated interpretive areas along the route, but most wildlife viewing takes place from the vehicle. Elk and bison are not staged near the road, and sightings can vary with the weather, season, and time of day. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the better times to visit, especially during hot weather when the animals may spend more time near shade or water.
Traffic moves at the pace of the animals. Bison sometimes stand on or cross the roadway, and visitors must wait rather than drive around them. Everyone must remain inside the vehicle when large animals are within 200 feet. Walking, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and motorcycles are prohibited inside the prairie. Pets must also remain secured in the vehicle.
The experience changes during the year. Tall native grasses and wildflowers become more prominent through summer and early fall. Bison breeding activity is most noticeable in July and August, while elk may be heard bugling during September and October. Wild turkeys, birds, butterflies, and smaller prairie animals may also be seen along the drive.
The prairie is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Admission is charged by vehicle, and the official LBL page currently lists the fee as $5. Visitors should check current hours, rates, and alerts before making the trip.
The loop is 3.5 miles long, but the amount of time needed varies. Most visits take about 30 minutes to an hour. Traffic may stop when animals are near or on the roadway, and visitors often spend additional time watching wildlife from the vehicle.
