Every family vacations a little differently.
Some kids wake up ready to swim before breakfast. Others would spend the whole day on a boat if you let them. Parents usually have their own wish list too, whether that’s relaxing by the water, exploring somewhere new, or simply finding a good place to eat together at the end of the day.
The nice thing about Kentucky Lake is that you don’t have to choose just one kind of day. It’s easy to mix time on the water with a little exploring, and you don’t need a packed itinerary to keep everyone entertained.
One mistake we see first-time visitors make is trying to fit too much into a single day.
Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, choose one activity that everyone is excited about and let the rest of the day build around it.
If your family wants to rent a pontoon, spend the afternoon on the lake. If the beach is calling your name, don’t worry about leaving after an hour just because something else is on the schedule. The same goes for Land Between the Lakes. Once you start exploring, you’ll probably find yourselves staying longer than you expected.
Most family vacations are a lot more enjoyable when nobody feels like they’re racing the clock.
One thing we hear from families all the time is that they don’t want to spend every single day doing the same thing.
That’s one of the advantages of vacationing around Kentucky Lake. You can spend the morning on the water, then head into Land Between the Lakes, grab dinner at a local restaurant in one of our nearby communities, or visit one of the area’s other attractions without driving for hours.
A little variety keeps everyone excited about what’s next, especially if you’re staying for several days.
One of the easiest ways to plan a successful family day is to think about what everyone in your group enjoys most.
If you’re traveling with younger children, a sandy beach, an easy nature trail, or a visit to The Nature Station can keep everyone entertained without wearing little legs out too quickly. Many families also find that renting a pontoon is one of the easiest ways to spend the day together since kids can swim, snack, and relax without constantly moving from place to place.
Families with older kids and teenagers usually have even more options. Kayaking, paddleboarding, watersports, hiking, biking, and exploring Land Between the Lakes all make for memorable days outdoors. If your crew enjoys a little more action, miniature golf and water parks are great ways to mix things up after a day on the lake.
If you’re traveling with grandparents or multiple generations, consider balancing active time with opportunities to slow down. Scenic drives through Land Between the Lakes, shopping in Grand Rivers, visiting Kentucky Dam, or enjoying a long lunch together can be just as memorable as a day on the water.
Where you stay can also make a big difference. A waterfront cabin with room to spread out might be perfect for one family, while another may prefer a resort with a pool, marina, restaurant, and activities all in one place. You can even sort accommodations based on what your family is looking for by visiting our Stay section.
If you’re staying four or five days, resist the temptation to schedule every one of them before you arrive.
Almost every family discovers something they wish they had more time for. Maybe it’s a beach your kids don’t want to leave, a town you’d like to explore a little longer, or a pontoon rental that turns into everyone’s favorite day of the trip.
Leaving one day open gives you the freedom to go back and do more of what your family enjoyed most.
Summer is the most popular season thanks to warm water, beach weather, boating, and family activities. Spring and fall are also excellent choices for families who enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring Land Between the Lakes in cooler temperatures.
Popular activities include renting a pontoon, visiting public beaches, exploring Land Between the Lakes, hiking easy trails, kayaking, wildlife viewing, miniature golf, and enjoying local restaurants.
That depends on the kind of vacation you’re planning. Waterfront cabins offer plenty of space for larger groups, while resorts often include pools, marinas, restaurants, and other amenities. Our stay page lets you compare accommodations based on your family’s needs.
Absolutely. Kentucky Lake has several public beaches, private resort beaches, and countless places where boaters enjoy swimming throughout the summer.
