If you ask longtime Kentucky Lake boaters about their favorite places to anchor for the afternoon, there’s a good chance The Sands will come up.
Unlike traditional swimming beaches, The Sands isn’t part of a park or recreation area. It’s a naturally formed stretch of sand that appears along the northern end of Kentucky Lake, creating a gathering place for boaters during the summer months. On warm weekends you’ll often find pontoons, fishing boats, and families anchored just offshore while people swim, float, and enjoy the sunshine.
It’s not a destination you’ll stumble across by accident, and that’s part of what makes it special.
One of the unique things about The Sands is that it doesn’t always look the same.
During the summer, it’s typically reached by boat, with visitors anchoring nearby and wading ashore. As Kentucky Lake begins its annual drawdown in late summer and early fall, more of the sandy shoreline becomes exposed. Depending on water levels, visitors may even be able to walk out to areas that spent much of the summer underwater.
Every season offers a slightly different experience, which is one of the reasons locals enjoy returning throughout the year.
There isn’t a schedule to follow once you arrive. Most people simply settle in and enjoy being on the water.

The Sands is best enjoyed by visitors who come prepared. There are no restrooms, trash cans, picnic areas, or other facilities, so you’ll want to bring everything you’ll need for the day, including drinking water, sunscreen, snacks, and anything else you don’t want to go without.
