About The Kentucky Opry

The Kentucky Opry has been part of the Benton music scene since 1988, when Clay and Barbie Campbell moved to the Kentucky Lake area with their family and turned a longtime dream into a small live-music venue. The first Kentucky Opry operated from a Quonset hut with seating for about 100 people, only a few blocks from the theater’s current location. As local audiences grew, so did the Opry, eventually moving into a new 300-seat building that was later expanded to its present 537-seat capacity.

Country music remains at the heart of the theater, but the calendar has broadened considerably over the years. Bluegrass, gospel, tribute concerts, comedy, magic, and touring performances now share the stage with traditional country shows. Recent and current schedules have included artists and groups such as Gene Watson, Jimmy Fortune, The Bellamy Brothers, Dailey & Vincent, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, along with tribute performances and specialty acts.

Some of the Opry’s most familiar nights are also among its most accessible. Free monthly shows spotlight bluegrass, gospel, and classic country music, helping keep local and regional performers connected to the same stage that hosts nationally known touring acts. Those recurring programs give the theater a community feel even as its concert schedule has grown beyond its early local roots.

The Kentucky Opry’s size is part of its character. At 537 seats, it is large enough to bring recognizable touring performers to Benton while still keeping the audience close to the stage. The result feels more personal than a large arena or convention-center show, fitting naturally with the smaller-town setting surrounding Kentucky Lake.

Located on Chilton Lane in Benton, the theater is within easy reach of Kentucky Lake, Marshall County lodging, restaurants, and other attractions around the lakes region. That makes an evening show an easy addition to a day spent boating, fishing, shopping, or exploring nearby communities.

More than three decades after its first performance, the Kentucky Opry is still doing much of what Clay and Barbie Campbell set out to create in the beginning: giving western Kentucky a place to gather around live music.
